How Merit is Measured
Our ranking system is 100% transparent and based on the established ELO system used by professional chess federations. Here's how it works:
The Elo rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players. When you win, you gain points from your opponent. When you lose, you lose points to them. The number of points gained or lost depends on the rating difference between you and your opponent. Beating a much higher-rated player gives you a huge rating boost, while beating a lower-rated player gives you only a few points. This ensures your rating is a precise, hard-earned measure of your skill.
Skill in blitz chess (fast games) doesn't always translate to skill in classical chess (slow games). That's why we maintain separate ELO ratings for each time control: Blitz, Rapid, and Classical. This gives you a chance to prove your mastery in your preferred style of play, and the rankings will always reflect the correct context.
A rating is only accurate if a player is active. If an account is inactive for a long period, their rating will be marked with a "?" to indicate lower confidence. This prevents players from reaching a high rating and then "camping" on it. To stay on the leaderboard, you have to consistently prove you deserve to be there. Your skill must be current, not historical.
